She will recount the difficulties of learning to advocate at her own IEP meetings, going to a college with limited-accessibility, and traveling through Europe armed only with a backpack and a sparkly cane. In this session, we will discuss ways to develop curriculum for an inclusive classroom and explore a multitude of practical strategies for incorporating all children. We will make use of artifacts, video clips, children’s work, and case studies throughout the session. Families are moving from place to place in ever increasing numbers. Relocating a family is challenging under any circumstance, but transitioning a child with a disability between schools, especially to new states or countries can be particularly difficult.  When families seek full inclusion, the situation becomes more complex with issues that seem to reveal how inclusion is understood differently by various people, based on culture and geography. This presentation describes one family’s journey through the moving process and how the changing social landscapes revealed localized structures where labeling and placement norms discriminated against a boy with Down syndrome.

When children experience separation, grief, loss, and trauma it can negatively impact their development and their ability to learn and feel safe in school settings.  Because of the unique experience and histories of children in adoptive, foster, and kinship families these types of negative factors may have an even greater impact on this population. Join Stephen, a self-advocate with autism and explore disability culture within our schools today.  Drawing from his own experiences as a student, Stephen will teach participants ways to evaluate the culture of disability within their own school and gain strategies that positively impact this culture in a variety of academic and extracurricular areas.  Specific emphasis will surround ways to more effectively involve and engage students in a well-designed Individualized Education Plan and how policy changes within various school teams can enhance disability culture and the entire school community.  By making small changes to the overall culture of a school, you can make the outcomes far better for ALL children.
